AAPIP/JAG publish open letter in Chronicle of Philanthropy 2.12.09 (Click here to read the letter in PDF format.)
Hello AAPIP Members & Friends,
AAPIP, in conjunction with the Joint Affinity Groups (JAG) recently developed an open letter to the field that we have strategically placed in the current issue of the Chronicle of Philanthropy (Vol XXI, No. 8, February 12, 2009). It is a paid-media feature that appears in the Opinion section of the paper on page 33.
We hope that you’ll take a moment or two to read through the letter. It’s a thoroughly engaging and thoughtful piece- the result of a joint leadership effort between AAPIP, the Association of Black Foundation Executives, Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Native Americans in Philanthropy, and the Women’s Funding Network. It provides an excellent chronicling of the achievements of the JAG over the course of the last 15 years and a thoughtful assessment of current environmental conditions. Finally, and perhaps most important, the letter outlines key strategic questions that we must now address as field moving forward, and the critical role that infrastructure groups like AAPIP and other colleague organizations will occupy in answering those questions.
The current issue has now ‘hit the stands’. If you have any questions at all or field any questions that you’d like answered, please feel free to contact Joe Lucero, Director of Communications, at joe@aapip.org. This is a good illustration of how we’re working to strategically position AAPIP, our work and our principles in the field. We hope you find it helpful to your work, too. Sincerely, AAPIP Staff (Click here to read the letter in PDF format.)

--NOW CLOSED--June 20th, 2008 - The National Gender and Equity Campaign (NGEC) is pleased to announce an Organizational Fellowship Program, a unique capacity building initiative focused on supporting community organizations who seek to activate their constituencies in shaping and influencing our democracy. AAPIP established the National Gender and Equity Campaign in response for a call to action by community leaders across the country to push for more long term investments in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) social justice movement building sector. As a national membership and philanthropic advocacy organization dedicated to advancing philanthropy and AAPI communities, AAPIP is in a unique position to serve as a bridge and to nurture innovative approaches to achieve social change.
Through the NGEC Organizational Fellowship Program, AAPI community organizations will build their capacity, leadership, and competencies in four areas essential to advancing a social justice movement: grassroots community organizing, leadership development, media/communications, and policy/advocacy with an emphasis on utilizing a gender and equity framework. The program will specifically provide multi-year general operating support, tailored capacity building training, and learning opportunities to think, strategize, and foster alliances among peers in order to address the underlying causes of inequity. Selected organizational partners will be awarded $75,000 annually over three years. For more information, visit us online at www.genderandequity.org.
--NOW CLOSED--The Civic Engagement Fund for Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) Communities RFP released 5.19.08 2008 Request for Proposal (RFP) 2008 Guidelines There will only be one RFP solicitation for Fiscal Year 2008 (October 1, 2008 - September 30, 2008) and RFP responses are by invitation only. The responses are to be received no later than 5:00pm on Monday, June 30, 2008. Please be sure to review the guidelines for information on key deadlines, the how to apply workshop, and the grants award range. The Civic Engagement Fund is a capacity building initiative designed to support AMEMSA nonprofit organizations through a mix of small grants and the provision of technical assistance. The Fund will support these organizations to develop strategically, foster greater exchange and collaboration with other immigrant organizations and networks, and strengthen the quality of their programs and overall effectiveness. It emerged from an initial community scan of the San Francisco Bay Area and a corresponding funders’ briefing in 2005 as a vehicle to both build the capacity of community based organizations serving newcomer and long-term residents from the AMEMSA communities, and continue the education of the philanthropic community. The Civic Engagement Fund was developed through a strategic partnership between AAPIP and The San Francisco Foundation, a regional community foundation. The collaborative now includes a total of seven additional philanthropic institutions. The Fund will be administered by AAPIP, given AAPIP’s mission to bridge philanthropy and Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, its geographic flexibility, and its capacity to support the grantee organizations. The seven philanthropic institutions that have contributed to the Fund will provide oversight over the grantmaking activity of the Fund. Each of the seven contributing philanthropic institutions will be represented on the Advisory Committee. The RFP period is now closed. If you have any questions about the Fund, e-mail civicengagement@aapip.org.

Growing Opportunities Report Now Available
| Growing Opportunities: Will Funding Follow the Rise in Foundation Assets and Growth of AAPI Populations? *new*
Read the Full Report (PDF) The giving trends of the top U.S. foundations to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities has not kept pace with the growth of these communities or of foundation assets, according to a new report released on June 21, 2007 by AAPIP. The report, Growing Opportunities, looks at the country's top 20 national foundations' grantmaking between 1990 and 2002 and finds significant funding disparities to AAPI communities in several areas. The report concludes with a call to action to the philanthropy field to reduce these gaps.

>> Briefing Paper on the Health Impacts of Criminalization 10.17.06 We are proud to announce that our publication, Briefing Paper on the Health Impacts of Criminalization on Asian Pacific American Children, Youth and Families is now available online. In California, AAPIs comprise only 3.4% of the prison population, however it is a rapidly growing population, especially among youth offenders. Furthermore, post 9/11 immigration policies as well as increased enforcement of the Illegal Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) of 1996 have led to the detention and deportation of thousands of men and boys of South Asian, Muslim, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian descent.
This project gathers baseline data on the health impacts of criminalization and incarceration on AAPI children, youth and families. Funded by a grant from The California Wellness Foundation. Read the paper (PDF).
>>Fact Sheet - Giving to Asian Pacific American Communities 05.06.06 Why is there a need to give to Asian Pacific Americans? This fact sheet addresses this simple question with an overview of foundation giving in AAPI communities based on the most recent publications released by the Foundation center. Since AAPIP’s publication of Invisible & In Need in 1992, foundation giving to organizations working in Asian Pacific American communities has only slightly increased from 0.2% to 0.4% in 2004.
