About the David and Lucile Packard Foundation
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is where the Program Analyst will work. The Packard Foundation was established in 1964. David and Lucile Packard believed that along with universities, national institutions, community groups, youth agencies, family planning centers, and hospitals, foundations constitute a great American tradition that complements government efforts to focus on society’s needs. The foundation is focused on improving the lives of children, families, and communities — and restoring and protecting our planet.
The foundation is now actively engaged in transforming to meet the issues of today. The foundation is deep in strategic planning, and the Program Analyst will join an organization at a time of internal reflection and external landscape analyses to develop strategies and structures.
About the Children, Families and Communities Program (CFC) The CFC program at the foundation focuses on ensuring all children have access to quality health and early education opportunities so they can grow up healthy, ready for school, and on track to reach their full potential. CFC is working on: advancing access to children’s health insurance, quality health, and nutrition services; improving the quality of formal and informal child care settings by supporting parents and care providers; and advancing paid family leave in California and nationally.
About the Partnership The UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business (through the Center for Social Sector Leadership) offers this unique fellowship in philanthropy at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation to provide next generation leaders the opportunity to engage with philanthropic and nonprofit leaders and work with a grantmaking team serving diverse issues and populations in the CFC program.
The vision for this partnership is to strengthen the future of philanthropy and civil society by providing recent graduates from diverse disciplines and backgrounds a professional-level introduction to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. The goals of the fellowship are to 1) introduce recent graduates to philanthropy and the role of nonprofits to strengthen their impact in a future career and 2) introduce the Foundation to fresh ideas, new skills, and diverse perspectives. The fellow will join a cohort of six other fellows at the Foundation working on conservation & science, reproductive health, and organizational effectiveness. There will be quarterly activities for the cohort of fellows.

The Analyst will perform analyses and make recommendations on a variety of policies, projects, programs and issues regarding children’s early learning and health. This position will take day-to-day direction from the CFC Program Director.
- Investigate data, trends, opportunities and gaps in the field to explore new strategies at the intersection of children’s early learning and health.
- Conduct research and analysis and make recommendations on specific topics of interest, such as systems development, scaling, advocacy, and learnings from the first 7 years of a 10 year strategy in early learning in three California communities.
- Provide written reports and oral presentations to CFC, other Foundation staff and trustees, grantees, and/or funding partners.
- Work closely with CFC staff, grantees, funding partners, government agencies, and content experts to develop and implement early learning and health strategies.

- Experience or interest in healthcare policy or early childhood education (ages 0-5).
- Structures analysis, performs synthesis, and provides written reports and presentations that meet project objectives and timelines.
- Strong writing skills to communicate research findings, analysis and recommendations for early learning and health strategies.
- Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both orally and in writing.
- Strong multitasking and can efficiently manage multiple simultaneous projects in diverse program areas with demanding timeframes.
- Demonstrated strong initiative and self-motivation.
- Works both independently and as a member of a highly collaborative team.
- Knowledge of and experience with nonprofit issues a plus.
- Uses discretion and maintains confidentiality.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

- Proficiency with Microsoft software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Proficiency with Google software including Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Graduate level education in business, social science, public policy, public health, social work, social science, education, economics, law, medicine, or related fields.
- Strong background or interest in either child/family healthcare policy or early childhood education (ages 05). The projects will rely on education, training, experience, or interest in these topics, especially as they intersect to create healthy, growing communities.
