Dr. Ahmad is the Deputy Mayor for Public Engagement for the city of Philadelphia where she oversees the Mayor’s commissions and offices on constituent-specific issues which include the Office of LGBT Affairs, the Office of Black Male Engagement and the Youth Commission. She is also the co-founder/ co-owner of JNA Capital, Inc., a real estate development and finance company based in Philadelphia, PA. Involvement in her local community is expansive; in 2011, she was appointed to the Philadelphia Community Foundation Board of Directors. Nina was a founding member of the Asian Mosaic Fund giving circle, and continues to serve on its advisory committee. Nina also sits on the Diversity Committee of William Penn Charter School (oldest Quaker School in the United States) and was one of the founding members of Asian Pacific Americans for Progress, a grassroots internet-empowered, national network of individuals who are committed to progressive action.
She serves on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and as the President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW). She also serves on the boards of the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (PICC) and Women’s Campaign International, which focuses on women’s equality through building skills to help women become effective agents of change.
Nina received her Doctoral degree in 1990 from Chemistry Department of the University of Pennsylvania. As a Postdoctoral Fellow, she trained with noted collagen expert, Darwin Prockop, M.D., Ph.D. at Thomas Jefferson University. Nina resides in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia with her husband Ahsan Nasratullah and two daughters.
