It’s been a burst of activity for us over the course of the last several days in Denver, Colorado–and we’re far from finished. In addition to our yearly Membership Meeting, there was a full slate of programs in partnership with other philanthropic affinity groups and allies, including the Council on Foundations (COF).

First, a special thanks to our partners at Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy, Rusty Stahl, Executive Director, and Sophia Silao, Associate Director for inviting Peggy Saika, AAPIP Executive Director,  to participate as a  panelist in the EPIP Emerging Leaders Salon.  Rounding out the AAPIP presence at EPIP’s gathering was Alice Hom, Philanthropic Advocacy Manager, and Kimi Mojica, our new Membership Services Manager.  Alice and Kimi also did a great job speaking with folks about AAPIP’s social justice philanthropy perspectives and enjoyed the synergy amongst the participants.

AAPIP Board Meeting

AAPIP went into full gear on Saturday, starting with our Board of Directors Meeting.   Every director from across the country attended, including AAPIP’s newly elected Board members:  Lillian “Beadsie” Woo, of the Annie E. Casey Foundation (Baltimore, MD), Jeanie Lee Boehmler, with Fight For Children (Washington DC), and Alice Ito, of the Marguerite Casey Foundation (Seattle, WA).

For another part of Saturday, we attended the Native Americans in Philanthropy’s (NAP) Native Philanthropy Institute.  AAPIP’s Cynthia Choi, Director of Philanthropic Advocacy, andBo Thao-Urabe, BRIDGE Director, both participated in sessions at the Institute that explored the shared experiences and interests of our communities as part of expanding social justice.  Finally, we wrapped up a full day with a moving and spirited joint dinner between the AAPIP and NAP staffs and board members, which included some rousing renditions of the song “Happy Birthday” in honor of both groups celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year!

AAPIP at COF

Peggy Saika started us off at COF by facilitating a session called Change Not Charity: Strategic Resource Mobilization, which was designed by Suzanne Siskel, Social Justice Philanthropy Director with The Ford Foundation.  This standing-room only session included remarks and observations by Kafi Blumenfeld, CEO, Liberty Hill Foundation; Mike Roberts, President, First Nations Development Institute; Nicky McIntyre, Executive Director, Mama Cash Fund for Women; and Rodney McKenzie, Jr., Executive Director, Resource Generation.

Winding down the COF conference on Monday evening, AAPIP co-sponsored the popular All For One Reception which originally organized by the Joint Affinity Groups and now co-sponsored by several of the groups participating at the conference.

AAPIP members, including Daniel Lee, Wendy Chang, Kyung Yoon, Ryan Yamamoto, Sachi Yoshi, Bharathi Sundaram, Jessica Del Rosario, Peter Chun, Dianne Yamashiro-Omi and, new Board member, Alice Ito, joined hundreds of affinity group friends and participants.
