The Here and Now Symposium, held on June 23rd, was a national convening co-presented by DLA Piper, Interpublic Group, the IW Group and AAPIP which focused on branding, marketing and funding issues impacting AAPI nonprofit organizations.

Over the past several years, AAPIP has conducted briefings of our report, “Growing Opportunities: Will Funding Follow the Rise in Foundation Assets and Growth of AAPI Populations?, across the country to various philanthropic audiences.  This session in Washington DC similarly provided compelling data and transparent analysis of the current levels of institutional philanthropic investment in AAPI communities, both regionally and nationally.

Joe Lucero (AAPIP Director of Communications) and Peggy Saika (AAPIP President and Executive Director) shared key findings on the enduring challenges and disparities in funding to AAPI groups, while also bringing attention to new, strategic opportunities to partner across sectors and to advocate for strengthening AAPI communities.

For the Q&A portion of this briefing,  we also invited two guest panelists to offer their valued perspectives:  Danielle Reyes (AAPIP Board Chairperson and Program Officer at the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation) shared her experiences and highlighted promising approaches to effective philanthropic advocacy for AAPI communities in the region; and Steven Lawrence (Senior Director of Research at the Foundation Center) shared his views on key issues on related to foundation data, funding impacts on AAPI nonprofits, and recent trends in the field.
