The Bay Area Justice Funders Network presents: Deepening Practices Towards Greater Equity

Original air date: 8/24/17

Description:

  • What values, core competencies, and practices can deepen and transform social justice philanthropy?
  • What can we do to increase the amount of philanthropic resources going to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities?
  • What strategies can we employ within our organization, chapters, and giving circles to:
    • Improve access to philanthropic resources for frontline grassroots organizations
    • Center social movement priorities in our grantmaking; and
    • Increase participation in our giving circles?

On August 24, AAPIP and CHANGE Philanthropy co-hosted a webinar featuring the Bay Area Justice Funders Network (BAJFN) which shared highlights from “The Choir Book: A Framework for Social Justice Philanthropy,” with participants from the Harmony Initiative, and members of the BAJFN network. Alexander Saingchin, Program Director of the Common Counsel Foundation, shared some effective strategies to aligning donors with the priorities of social justice movements. Elaine Mui, Grants and Operations Manager of the General Service Foundation, shared how to streamline grantmaking practices to minimize the burden placed on grantees. Sara Velten, Vice President at the Latino Community Foundation, shared how the deepening of relationships allowed them to grow a giving circle to more than 500 members.
