Aki Shibuya

Aki Shibuya has been part of the AAPIP team in various interim capacities since 2013 and officially joined the team in 2015. As AAPIP’s Membership and Communications Associate, she supports AAPIP’s national membership network and implements organizational communications strategies.

Prior to joining AAPIP, Aki taught English at Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand, through the Grinnell Corps Fellowship, a post-graduate service program aimed to match the needs of global and local organizations through local partnerships. She also volunteered at a local NGO that tracked human rights abuses in Burma, served as a mentor at various children’s homes, and traveled extensively throughout the region.

Aki received her MA in South East Asian Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, and her BA in History from Grinnell College.

Aki, in her own words: What do you like doing that you don’t get paid for? I am an avid fan of the Great British Bake Off, which reawakened a passion for baking all sorts of yummy treats. Cakes, bread, cookies, cupcakes, macarons – you name it! Luckily for my colleagues, I often have extras to share after a weekend of baking…
