AAPIs encompass a highly diverse array of communities speaking over 48 languages and hailing from countries comprising approximately 60% of the world’s population, yet share this statistic in the United States: they are the least familiar with and therefore the least likely to be counted in the Census.
While foundations have already developed their Census strategy and made grants, this webinar will provide additional tools to bring AAPI communities into sharper focus. Our guest speakers will provide a landscape overview of philanthropic and community Census efforts in AAPI communities locally and nationally, illuminate funding gaps and barriers to community engagement, and walk through the new Census Mapping Tool which provides detailed census-tract level maps for the largest 20 metropolitan for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

Christine Chen, APIA Vote
Christine Chen, the founding executive director from 2006-2008 returned to APIAVote in January 2011 to serve as its current Executive Director. During her tenure she had strengthened and expanded APIAVote’s partners into 28 states. APIAVote’s research and polling of Asian American voters and their regional trainings and field programs have strengthened the local grassroots programs in reaching and mobilizing Asian American and Pacific Islander voters. Through all these efforts, APIAVote has played a key role in elevating the Asian American and Pacific Islander electorate to an unprecedented national level in recent years. Karen Narasaki, Consultant
Karen K. Narasaki is a national authority on voting rights and redistricting, census, media, immigrant rights, and race relations. She is a consultant to the Bauman Foundation on the census and to the Redistricting Project of the New Venture Fund. In 2014, President Obama appointed her to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. For two decades, she was president/executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice/AAJC where she helped to lead the successful effort to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act; defend federal affirmative action programs; expand federal hate crimes law to cover people with disabilities, LGBTQ individuals, and women; reduce the under count of minorities in the decennial census; increase minorities on television and defend family immigration. She also served on the U.S. Census Decennial Advisory Committee and the FCC’s Advisory Committee for Diversity in the Digital Age. She is a graduate of Yale University and of the UCLA School of Law. Karthick Ramakrishnan, AAPI Data
Karthick Ramakrishnan is professor of public policy and political science at the University of California, Riverside, and founding director of its Center for Social Innovation. He has published many articles and 6 books, including most recently, Framing Immigrants (Russell Sage, 2016) and The New Immigration Federalism (Cambridge, 2015), and has written dozens of op-eds and appeared in over 1,000 news stories. He was recently named to the Frederick Douglass 200 and is currently finishing a book entitled Citizenship Reconfigured (Cambridge, 2020). He holds a BA in international relations from Brown University and a PhD in politics from Princeton. Ramakrishnan is also a Board Member of The California Endowment, Chair of the California Commission on APIA Affairs, and Director of the Inland Empire Census Complete Count Committee. Ramakrishnan directs the National Asian American Survey and is founder of AAPIData.com, which publishes demographic data and policy research on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
