Job Description

The Associate Development Writer is a key member of Earthjustice’s Donor Marketing & Engagement team, which is responsible for developing and implementing strategic events, trips, and communications that engage, cultivate, and steward Earthjustice prospects and donors.

The Associate Development Writer is responsible for writing and editing donor communications materials that are compelling, accurate, and consistent with the Earthjustice brand. These materials support the organization’s ambitious fundraising goals and play a critical role in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all Earthjustice supporters.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Donor Communications, the Associate Development Writer works closely with program VPs, attorneys, Communications and Marketing staff, and the Development department to craft effective donor-facing collateral.

Materials the Associate Development Writer will produce include donor reports and proposals, events and trip collateral, newsletters, fact sheets, brochures, program updates, cover letters, email messages, and website content.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management and Content Production (55%)

  • Manage a high volume of writing and editing assignments on a variety of topics and with firm deadlines.
  • Fufill the role of owner for donor communications projects, establishing objectives, defining parameters for success, communicating with stakeholders, and utilizing project management technology to move each asset through a streamlined workflow.
  • Ensure messaging aligns with organizational brand and values.
  • Work with the graphic designer to produce attractive and appropriate donor collateral as needed. Make text corrections and help finalize materials in Adobe Creative Suite.

Program Knowledge (15%)

  • Become fluent in the work of Earthjustice regional offices, programs, and campaigns.
  • Communicate with program staff to obtain complete, up-to-date information on their work and determine what information is appropriate to share with donors.
  • Develop a working knowledge of Earthjustice’s key past accomplishments and history.

Donor Communications Contributions (15%)

  • Liaise with the Communications department in order to share information and collaborate on cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Contribute to operational improvements to ensure success of the donor communications team in support of the Development department
  • Edit and proofread written materials created by other Development and Communications staff.

Professional Development, Organizational Engagement and Administrative duties (15%)

  • Identify and participate in professional development opportunities (e.g. conferences, webinars, seminars, etc.) to enhance storytelling and communications skills and techniques, and stay abreast of new and emerging communications tools.
  • Engage meaningfully in enhancing equity in the organization’s approach to donor communications.
  • Engage in initiatives and trainings that contribute to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
  • Attend departmental and team retreats for shared planning, team building, and professional development.
  • Engage in continual improvement efforts, relationship building, training and knowledge sharing, and feedback, appreciation and acknowledgement exercises across departments.
  • Ensure compliance, data hygiene and other administrative duties are fulfilled.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree desired.
  • Equivalent of at least one year’s experience as a full-time writer/editor.
  • Experience leveraging and refining project management best practices.
  • Ability to synthesize complex legal and scientific material, translate it into compelling text, and communicate it clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to leverage writing skills to deliver against creative parameters for success involving varied donor engagement objectives, voice and tone.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to leverage emotional intelligence to effectively collaborate and communicate with a wide Interest in environmental and public health issues.
  • Journalistic, writing, environmental, and/or scientific background preferred.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.
  • Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.

Salary is based on experience and location.

  • Salary range in San Francisco, CA: $71,200 – $79,100
  • Salary range in Los Angeles, CA: $67,700 – $75,200
  • Salary range in Denver, CO: $64,100 – $71,200
  • Salary range in Houston, TX: $60,600 – $67,300
  • Salary range for remote (US) varies: $60,600 – $79,100
