Job Description

Fair Food Network (FFN) is seeking an experienced professional to join the Finance Team as Director of Finance. The Director will be responsible for maintaining organizational and grant financial, accounting, and support services to meet the needs of FFN and its donors. This full-time role combines leadership in financial management with hands-on responsibilities encompassing financial reporting and analysis, budget development, grant management and compliance, as well as proven ability to guide strategic financial decisions that align with an organization’s goals.

The Director of Finance will report to the Vice President of Finance, Cassandra Fletcher-Martin (https://fairfoodnetwork.org/people/cassandra-fletcher-martin/), and assist in supporting the organization’s overall financial health and sustainability. The Director will serve on FFN’s leadership team and will have a crucial role to play in implementing the mission, vision, and strategy that supports their work. This position is based in Detroit, MI, and can be a hybrid role with travel to the office for a minimum of 1-2 days per week.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE DIRECTOR

The Director of Finance will engage with the following challenges and opportunities:

General Accounting

  • Provide oversight of general accounting functions including accounts receivable and payable review and approval, ensuring proper cost allocation and policy/procedure compliance, cash management and financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze quarterly and annual budget to actual reports for organization, by program and functional area; forecasting financial performance to identify trends and opportunities and enable strategic decisions about program and organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Assist Vice President of Finance in assessing financial, programmatic and organizational needs based on current resources and projected trends.
  • Oversee month-end close process, through monthly payroll allocation approval, monthly funder allocation review and approval, available grant funds and monthly budget to actual report updates.
  • Lead organization annual budget process and required annual financial and program audits.

Program/Grant Accounting

  • Manage grant accounting activities, including budgeting, reporting, compliance monitoring, and reimbursement requests.
  • Manage multiple public and private grants to ensure grant funding is appropriately allocated with respect to time and use restrictions, monitoring individual grant budgets and spending, and optimizing allocation for programmatic and organization sustainability.
  • Lead quarterly review meetings with finance, fundraising and program teams, providing quarterly organization and program budget to actual reports, and elevating strategic opportunities as appropriate.
  • Perform ad-hoc financial analysis in response to requests or to provide support to various programs.

Oversight & Administration

  • Supervise finance staff and provide mentorship and development opportunities.
  • Oversee and manage financial accounting systems, customization, and ongoing maintenance (Oracle NetSuite, Concur).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial, federal and donor rules/regulations, and internal policies/procedures.
  • Develop and manage appropriate internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial records and reporting processes.

Work Location: This position is based in Detroit, Michigan, and can be a hybrid role with travel to the office for a minimum of 1 – 2 days per week.

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $96,675 – $111,780, commensurate with experience. A generous benefits package is also provided, which includes full health benefits, 401K match, flexible PTO policy, and professional development opportunities.

Job Qualifications

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

While no candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate for the Director position will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • Between 5 – 8 years of professional experience, with a minimum of 5 years of nonprofit organization financial experience, with progressive growth in financial management including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and grants accounting.
  • Experience holding organizational responsibility for the accuracy of all financial data, and timeliness in reporting and audit coordination are required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, financial analysis and nonprofit auditing standards.
  • Experience with federal grants and regulations, preferably with three to five years related experience working within federally funded organizations. Significant municipal and/or state funded organizational experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate and summarize financial records for accuracy and conformance to procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to effectively communicate financial information to non-financial managers.
  • Advanced experience with financial management systems, Oracle NetSuite and Concur preferred, and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills; including attention to detail and follow through.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
