MULTICULTURAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The mission of the Multicultural Fellowship Program is to equip emerging leaders of color with the experience, knowledge and network to create an equitable Bay Area. For over 30 years, the Multicultural Fellowship has been a career accelerator to nearly 100 alumni who are motivated and creative agents of change.
Successful candidates are early-career professionals who are new to philanthropy and of diverse cultural backgrounds who show promise and passion to create significant social change in the Bay Area. The Fellowship offers an unparalleled opportunity to work within the San Francisco Foundation and explore the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors in the Bay Area through a racial equity and economic inclusion framework. Each Fellow will embark on this journey with three other Fellows, Foundation staff, and an alumni community of support.
The Multicultural Fellowship cohort consists of four Fellows. Fellows are placed within the People Pathway, Power Pathway, Place Pathway or Strategic Learning and Evaluation team. Multicultural Fellows work within their one program team to increase team capacity, provide a fresh perspective and contribute to the efficacy of the team’s work towards advancing racial and economic equity in the five Bay Area counties that the Foundation serves.
Our Multicultural Fellowship Program is a transformational two-year, full-time program that offers:
- Experiential learning opportunities: Fellows work within a program team to learn how to advance social equity by leveraging grantmaking and other donor service tools
- Personal and professional development: Fellows join a cohort learning community to reflect on and refine their leadership practice, interpersonal skills and self-awareness
- Meaningful Network: Fellows gain direct access to a multi sector community of philanthropic partners and join an alumni network of nearly 100 leaders
- Instant Access: Fellows will engage with a wide array of nonprofit, community, government and philanthropic leaders through conferences, trainings, mentorship and convenings
GENERAL SCOPE OF WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR MULTICULTURAL FELLOWS
The Fellowship consists of four Fellows. Each Fellow works specifically within one of the Foundation’s teams: the People Pathway, Power Pathway, Place Pathway or Strategic Learning and Evaluation. Fellows can expect an individually nuanced learning experience while also being part of a cohort learning community. Under the direction and guidance of their supervisors, each Fellow will have the opportunity to:
Personal and Professional Development
- Participate in a learning community of Fellows. The Fellows cohort is a collaborative group where Fellows learn tools and frameworks that will make them more effective in their roles, increase their self-awareness, expand their knowledge of the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors and contribute to their cohort members’ growth. Meetings occur throughout the work week on and offsite.
- Provide and learn from new perspectives. Constructively offer perspectives that are unique to further the work of the cohort, team, and foundation. Learn to be open to new methods, systems and approaches to all aspects of work.
- Engage in learning opportunities. Attend a variety of local and national conferences and meetings for personal and professional development purposes. Approach daily tasks and events as opportunities to both learn and contribute to others’ learning.
Community Impact Strategy Support
- Participate in strategy development of program initiatives or special projects. This could involve project managing, research, outreach to community partners, and or the identification of needed partnerships and collaborations.
- Provide support on projects across programs and departments. Coordinate on projects with other Foundation departments e.g., Finance, Marketing and Communications, IT, and Donor Development.
- Thought leadership and information dissemination. Conduct and share research through key speaking engagements, articles, and other social media opportunities. Coordinate convenings and briefings with multiple stakeholders on content-based issues.
- Expand understanding, support, and collaboration with external partners. Identify and facilitate opportunities to bring various constituencies and stakeholders together to further the goals of the Equity Agenda.
- Act as team lead on special assignments which may include outreach, meeting planning, communication with constituents and managing small projects as assigned.
- Cross departmental collaboration. Work with the CEO’s Office, Philanthropy and Gift Planning, Grants Management, Marketing and Communications and other departments.
- Support the outreach, evaluation and recommendation for Rapid Response Fund grants.
- Coordinate grant site visits, community meetings, special convening opportunities, and grantee communications.
STRATEGIC LEARNING AND EVALUATION FELLOW
The Strategic Learning and Evaluation team reflects the Foundation’s commitment to learn from our work and enhance our impact in growing racial and economic equity in the San Francisco Bay Area. The team is responsible for leading internal learning efforts and assessing our external impact, while supporting strategy refinement to ensure that the Foundation is effective in achieving our equity agenda. To this end, the team is responsible for building the foundation’s evaluation and learning infrastructure, carrying out internal and external evaluations, and partnering with stakeholders to manage and maintain the Bay Area Equity Atlas, a comprehensive data support system that tracks the state of equity across the region. The Strategic Learning and Evaluation team also helps to foster a culture of learning within the foundation–by gathering and sharing data, arranging organizational learning opportunities, and building robust learning culture.
To achieve population-level impact in advancing racial equity, the foundation is partnering with the Annie E. Casey Foundation to adopt the Results Count™ framework. A successful candidate for the Strategic Learning and Evaluation team will have experience with and knowledge of evaluation frameworks and methods.
Scope of Work and Responsibilities of the Strategic Learning and Evaluation Fellow
In addition to the general scope of work and responsibilities, with the direction and guidance of their supervisors, the Strategic Learning and Evaluation Fellow will:
Evaluation and Learning
- In partnership with the SLE Director, implement and refine the Foundation’s evaluation and learning approaches. Coordinate and facilitate the internal and external meetings to review strategy and share learnings.
- Participate in internal and external evaluation projects including conducting data collection, analysis, and reporting. Coordinate and manage projects in partnership with SLE team members.
- Support and co-lead the development and coordination of ongoing organization-wide data collection of milestones, performance measures, annual reports, and staff surveys.
- Partner with staff across the Foundation to identify learning opportunities for deeper impact. This may include facilitated meetings about using the Bay Area Equity Atlas and other tools.
- Coordinate with the SLE team to share the Bay Area Equity Atlas through grantee and staff trainings.
- Coordinate convenings and briefings to expand the reach of the Bay Area Equity Atlas.
- Participate in and support the Rapid Response Fund grantmaking process. Support the outreach, evaluation, and recommendations for Rapid Response Fund grants.
- Create an organizational process that leverages restricted trust dollars to amplify our efforts to advance racial equity and economic inclusion.
When determining compensation at the Foundation, we consider total compensation including base wage, variable pay, discretionary and legally required medical and fringe benefits, education and development expenses, taxes and insurance. Each position offers a set pay based on external market and internal equity factors. In compliance with the California pay transparency law, salaries are listed for each position on the posting sites where positions are posted. In their first year, Fellows will be paid the equivalent to $80,000 per year plus benefits (based on $41.03 per hour, standard work week of 37.5 hours). A standard work week of 37.5 hours, which will include periodic evening work and some travel, is required. Fellows will also benefit from a robust professional development package for the duration of their Fellowship.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MULTICULTURAL FELLOWS
- Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the Foundation’s programmatic areas of focus or a related discipline is preferred
- Additional work experience, educational degrees and certificates will be considered
- Minimum of five years and maximum of eight years of relevant experience. Relevant experience can include progressively responsible work experience in the public or non-profit sectors, as well as lived and volunteer experience
- Demonstrated experience in project management, strategy development, and implementation
- Experience in applying a racial or economic equity frame in work environments is required
- Proven record of successfully working independently and collaboratively in teams is required
- Understanding of Bay Area nonprofit and philanthropic communities is preferred
