Event Series: Affinity Spaces

Filipinx Affinity Space Featuring Damayan Migrant Workers Association

March 11 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm PDT

Wednesday, March 11, 2026 | 2–3 PM PT / 5–6 PM ET | Zoom | AAPIP Members Only

As Filipino professionals in philanthropy, we carry histories of migration, labor, and resistance, often into institutions that don’t fully see or fund our communities.

This session is an opportunity to connect that history to the present moment.

Riya Ortiz, Executive Director of Damayan Migrant Workers Association, will join us to share what her organization is working on right now: wage theft recovery, immigration relief, support for labor trafficking survivors, and building worker power with Filipino migrant and domestic workers across New York, New Jersey, and nationally.

Founded in 2002 by Filipina domestic workers who organized in response to employer abuse, Damayan is one of the most respected Filipino migrant-led organizations in the country. Riya will give us a direct look at what grassroots organizing looks like on the ground in this political moment, and what meaningful philanthropic solidarity can actually look like in practice.

We’ll close with space for dialogue and small group reflection among peers.

The session will feature:

  • A picture of the landscape for Filipino migrant and domestic workers in the tri-state area
  • Insight into Damayan’s organizing strategies and immediate priorities
  • Connection with fellow Filipinx professionals in philanthropy
  • Concrete reflection on how your resources, relationships, and institutional influence can align with this work

Facilitated by Ariane Cruz, Senior Manager of Public Policy & Collaboration at Philanthropy New York and co-chair of the AAPIP-NY Chapter Steering Committee.
