Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have been the fastest growing racial groups in the country, and the 2020 Census is expected to show continued rapid population gains. At the same time, the Census Bureau’s research has also shown that Asian Americans are the racial group least familiar with the Census, and the ones most reluctant to participate. Given these twin dynamics, it is more essential than ever for philanthropy, government, industry, and academia to go “all in” and ensure a complete and accurate count among AAPI communities.
AAPI Data and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) are excited to release a simple, yet powerful, mapping tool to help journalists, decision-makers, and community organizations better understand the diversity and geographic settlement patterns of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This tool, available at http://censusmaps.aapidata.com/ provides detailed census-tract level maps for the 20 largest metropolitan areas for Asian Americans and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders (NHPI) in the United States. For each tract, users can see the largest Asian American or Pacific Islander resident group, as well as get more information on the population size and share of 21 Asian American and 6 Pacific Islander detailed origin groups.
We know that stakes are high around the Census and its implications for AAPI communities and the country are profound. We also know that the barriers to a full count across the country in AAPI communities are numerous; one in three Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, and one in five Asian Americans live in “hard to count” areas. The fight around including a citizenship question is taking a toll and misinformation about how it will be used is creating more fear than in the past. Additionally, an online format and so few resources (the Census Bureau is only translating into 7 different Asian languages and whole communities such as South Asians, are left out) is a recipe for disaster. The Census Bureau anticipates that Asians are the least likely to complete the Census, so the gaps are enormous and there is much work to be done. Therefore, to help ensure that our communities complete the census, we are sharing the following resources.
