Celebrating our 35th anniversary in 2025, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP)  provides community care for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) people in philanthropy and works to increase the scale and impact of philanthropic resources aimed at advancing the inclusion, health, and wellbeing of AANHPI communities in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.  

Established in 1990, AAPIP is a justice-minded, national philanthropy-serving organization that provides unique community spaces for AANHPIs and allies in philanthropy. As a membership-based organization, AAPIP centers equity and justice in philanthropy to move money and build power for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities and an inclusive democracy. Anchored by a national team, AAPIP works across the country through a chapter network as sites of regional activism serving as a bridge between philanthropy and local non-profit organizations. These chapters are centers for place based advocacy, information sharing, leadership development, community building, and networking around AANHPI issues and philanthropy.  

AAPIP currently has 11 chapters spread across the following locations: Boston, Chicago, Denver (Rocky Mountain), Minneapolis & St. Paul (Twin Cities), New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Silicon Valley, and Washington, D.C.

Job Description

As a member of AAPIP’s program team, the Director of Chapter Strategy and Engagement will play a pivotal role in building out the infrastructure of and increasing capacity for our chapter network. The Director will be responsible for developing, managing, and coordinating programming and technical assistance related to chapter, regional, and local engagement. The position will cultivate connections with local community members, philanthropic leaders, and external partners; collaborate on national programmatic goals; and contribute to AAPIP’s overall mission, vision, and strategic direction.

The position will report to the Vice President of Programs. 

This role is remote and will require travel for chapter events, conferences, staff retreats.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned): 

Vision and Strategic Leadership: 

  • Cultivate an understanding of each chapter and their local and regional landscape and create a vision and strategy for short and long-term chapter engagement, infrastructure support, and potential growth, including developing a workplan to assess current chapter capacity and needs, and execute on that vision 
  • Explore new and creative opportunities for chapter programming that align with AAPIP’s strategic and programmatic goals and that highlight local chapter concerns 
  • Serve as a thought partner to the AAPIP program team and chapter leadership 

Program Development and Management: 

  • Organize and facilitate an annual leadership retreat and quarterly strategy meetings to promote community-building, learning, exchange updates on community issues, and inform AAPIP’s national strategy and goals 
  • Train and manage chapter leaders on administrative components of chapter work, including reviewing, approving, and monitoring funding requests, processing payments, updating databases, and create a comprehensive guidebook inclusive of those pieces and other helpful guiding principles for chapter leaders 
  • In collaboration with the program team, support the development of national programs with a chapter lens, including supporting AAPIP’s national conference 

Community and Partner Relationship Building and Maintenance:  

  • Build and strengthen AAPIP’s relationships with philanthropic leaders, community members, and other local leaders to cultivate connections and share regional strategies, lessons learned, and other tactics.  
  • Represent AAPIP and its chapters externally at philanthropy events, as needed
  • Work with the senior leadership team to identify and develop new funding opportunities 

Administration: 

  • Provide administrative and technical support to chapters to design and execute chapter programs that are aligned with national priorities and goals 
  • Develop and manage the chapter budget 
  • Amplify and support chapter communications and work closely with AAPIP’s communications teams to keep them apprised of chapter programs and events to maintain alignment with national communications 
  • Manage chapter leadership transitions, monitoring terms, supporting AAPIP elections, and assisting with onboarding as needed
  • Manage consultants and any future chapter staff as needed

The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $125,000, depending on experience. AAPIP offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and paid leave.

Job Qualifications

Education/Experience 

  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience of leadership working at an AANHPI-focused nonprofit, philanthropy-serving organization, membership organization with chapters, or foundation. 
  • Working knowledge of and commitment to AANHPI communities, communities of color, and racial and social justice are a must.
  • A solid understanding of and experience working in the philanthropic sector is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a membership or chapter-based organization is also strongly preferred.

Skills & Qualifications 

  • Experience designing and implementing programming that is both aligned with the larger organizational strategy and goals and tailored to local needs. 
  • Strong diplomacy, facilitation, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen effectively, to select and use appropriate communication methods, and to present ideas and information effectively. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, manage budgets, and juggle multiple constituencies, with an ability to manage consultants and potential future staff as needed.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the job. 
  • Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Docs. Experience with NEON or a comparable CRM is highly desirable.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to chapter events, conferences, and staff retreats as needed  (estimated travel is approximately 25 percent of work time during busy seasons).
